Sound Design for broadcast graphics

Fake Crowd Noise

With no fans allowed in stadiums due to COVID-19, I was tasked with the challenge of coming up with how we would pump fake crowd noise into the game broadcasts. I wanted to do it in a way that would feel natural, subtle, and authentic.

I first made a 1 hour long looping bed of audio that mimicked the sound of a full stadium. This would play at all times during the match under the game commentators.

For situational crowd reactions, I clipped off audio snippets from home games over the years with multiple variations of each circumstance. This included actions such as cheering, booing, clapping, crowd rises, and original Union chants. These sounds were then loaded onto a MIDI sequencer that would be controlled by a Union fan during the game.
